TAHLEQUAH — Northeastern State put up a fight late, but Missouri Southern broke through with a four-run eighth inning to claim an 8-4 extra-innings victory over the RiverHawks on Saturday afternoon.
The RiverHawks (11-24, 5-10 MIAA) managed just four hits in the game, with Korynn Tindel accounting for two of them. Madison Nance delivered a big swing with a two-run homer in the sixth inning, her second of the season, to tie the game.
Missouri Southern (26-11, 6-3 MIAA) came out swinging, scoring three quick runs in the first inning off a pair of singles and a homer to right field. Northeastern State answered with a run in the bottom half of the frame, as Lauryn Heinle grounded out to bring home Tindel.
After two scoreless innings, the Lions extended their lead to 4-1 with a two-out RBI single to center in the fourth. The RiverHawks had a chance to rally in the fifth after two errors by Southern put a pair of runners on base, but they couldn't capitalize.
The breakthrough came in the sixth, when Tindel scored from second on a throwing error, cutting the deficit to 4-2. Moments later, Nance launched a seventh-pitch homer over the right-field fence, evening the score and injecting new life into the RiverHawks' dugout.
The game remained knotted until extras, when Southern loaded the bases with no outs and cleared them with a four-run outburst, securing their sixth consecutive win over Northeastern State.
Madison Heinle pitched four innings for NSU, while Braedyn Sheofee (1-4) took the loss after working into the eighth. Ryleigh Peters recorded the final three outs for the RiverHawks.
