EMPORIA, Kan. -- Northeastern State wrapped up its regular season with a tough 6-1 loss against Emporia State on Saturday at the Kossover Family Tennis Complex.
Adel Ismagulova shined for the RiverHawks, securing the team's lone singles win with a straight-sets victory over Emporia State's Giovanna Ferreira, 6-3, 6-2. Despite the bright spot, Northeastern State struggled to gain momentum across the board, dropping five of six singles matches.
In doubles, the RiverHawks faced a similar fate with Emporia State claiming the point with 6-2 and 6-3 wins at two and three.
Barbora Havlova, Lucia Bontempo, Camila de Michele, Sofia Kotliarova, and Josie Jarvis all fought hard but came up short in their respective singles matches. The RiverHawks fell to 6-12 overall and 4-5 in MIAA play to close out the regular season.
"We were a little shorthanded today, trying to get a couple of people healthy for the MIAA tournament, but I thought we competed well," said head coach Tim McLane. We didn't necessarily execute as well as we're capable of during the match, but the intent was there, and we worked hard. We're not sure exactly who we face in the quarterfinals just yet, but we'll spend a few days getting ready for that this week before we head to Springfield."
Emporia State improved to 10-9 overall and 5-4 in the conference with the win.
