PITTSBURG, Kan. -- Rain turned Wednesday's MIAA Tournament opening-round game into a tale of two halves for Northeastern State, as the RiverHawks saw their season come to an end with a 16-6 loss to Washburn.
Northeastern State (16-34) held a 4-3 lead with one out in the top of the fifth inning before a weather delay halted play for more than 90 minutes. When play resumed, Washburn seized the momentum, scoring 13 runs over the final three innings and run-ruling the RiverHawks for the second time this season.
Colton Ayres led NSU at the plate with three hits, while
Gage Williams reached base four times, including two hits.
Izac Sizemore started on the mound and struck out four over 3.2 innings.
Holden Yaksick (1-7) took the loss, entering just before the rain delay and facing two batters afterward.
Washburn grabbed an early lead in the second inning on a double steal. NSU responded in the third with a two-out single to center by Ayres to tie the game.
The RiverHawks took their first lead in the fourth inning with a two-run homer from
Austin Rees—his first of the season. The Ichabods answered in the bottom half with a pair of two-out doubles to even the game at 3-3.
In the fifth, NSU briefly reclaimed the lead, scoring on an infield throwing error. However, following the 96-minute delay, Washburn stormed back, outscoring the RiverHawks 15-3 the rest of the way.
Washburn improved to 27-24 and advances to face Pittsburg State on Thursday.
