TULSA, Okla. — A rough finish to the third and final round placed Northeastern State in 11th at the finish in the 27th NSU Men's Golf Classic on Tuesday.
The RiverHawks recorded their highest-scoring round with a 292 to wrap up with an 855 (283-280-292) overall. Central Oklahoma would take home the victory with an 828 (274-276-278).
Head golf coach Scott Varner described the finish as "very frustrating", noting that "we had a great opportunity at a top five team finish with four holes to play."
Will Livermore entered the day tied for second, while Nathan Biais was inside the top ten individually. Both saw their highest-scoring rounds occur Tuesday, with Livermore shooting a 75 to finish with a 208 (67-66-75), while Biais concluded with an identical overall score (70-67-71). The duo would tie for 14th among all competitors.
Ian Wilcoxen scored a 74 on day two to finish with a 221 (72-75-74) overall. Tripp Jackson also finished with a 221 (76-73-72), finding improved results with each round. Cole Waymire ended with a 226 (74-74-78).
The young duo of Wilcoxen and Jackson were a bright spot in Varner's eyes late in the tournament.
"I challenged [them] to finish even or under on those last four holes and they did it." Varner said. "[I'm] proud of Tripp in his first collegiate tourney. He was one under on his last 25 holes."
Kaden Risenhoover, Juan Vergel and Evan Weaver competed as individuals. Risenhoover would finish the event with a 214 (72-69-73), while Vergel would add a 216 (71-74-71) and Weaver provided a 228 (77-76-75).
"Thankful to have put on another fantastic home tourney in my 27th NSU Men's Classic." Varner said. "We are young and talented. We will go back to work and figure it out."
Northeastern State is back in action when they travel to St. Joseph, Mo. for the Holiday Inn Express Invitational, beginning Oct. 7.
