PITTSBURG, Kan. --
Deyanna Douglas poured in 24 points to match her career high, and Northeastern State stunned No. 11 Pittsburg State, 80-76, Wednesday night at John Lance Arena in a landmark victory for the RiverHawks.
NSU (16-3, 8-2 MIAA) snapped multiple streaks with the upset — none more satisfying than notching their first win at Pitt State's home floor since 1997. The victory also marked their first against a ranked opponent since February 2022.
Douglas scored 19 of her game-high 24 in the first half as the RiverHawks led from the opening tip through halftime. But the Gorillas (14-4, 7-2) roared back and built a 12-point third-quarter lead before NSU unleashed a game-changing 21-5 run.
Snowda Watie and
McKenzie Smith each had seven points during that six-minute flurry that flipped the script. Smith finished with 11 points, while
Gabrielle Tilley added 16, going a perfect 10-for-10 from the free throw line.
Pitt State trimmed the deficit to three in the final seconds, but Tilley calmly knocked down four straight free throws to seal the deal — and the drought-snapping triumph.
The RiverHawks turned defense into offense all night, forcing 20 turnovers and converting them into 30 points. NSU also got a big lift from its bench, which outscored the Gorillas' reserves 31-13.
Ja'Miya Brown led Pitt State with 22 points, including six 3-pointers.
Northeastern State will look to keep the momentum rolling when it visits Missouri Southern at 1:30 p.m. Saturday.
