TAHLEQUAH, Okla. -- Northeastern State led for more than 35 minutes Wednesday night, but a late push from Rogers State handed the RiverHawks a 53-51 setback at the NSU Event Center.
NSU dropped to 16-11 overall and 8-10 in the MIAA, while Rogers State improved to 10-17 and 7-11 in league play.
The RiverHawks built a strong first-half cushion, taking a 30-22 lead into the break. NSU shot 44.4 percent from the field in the opening 20 minutes and used a 7-0 run late in the second quarter to stretch the advantage to 10 points, its largest of the night.
Northeastern State extended the margin to 38-28 midway through the third quarter before the Hillcats chipped away, closing the period on a 6-0 run to cut the deficit to four.
Rogers State outscored NSU 19-13 in the fourth quarter and took its first lead of the second half with just under nine minutes to play. The RiverHawks remained within one possession down the stretch but were unable to regain the advantage.
NSU finished the game shooting 37.7 percent (20-of-53) from the floor and forced 13 turnovers.
The RiverHawks return to action Saturday, Feb. 28, hosting Central Oklahoma for Senior Day at the NSU Event Center.
