SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- Northeastern State women's tennis secured two strong singles victories but dropped its second match of the spring, falling 5–2 on the road to Drury on Sunday at the Cooper Tennis Complex.
The RiverHawks (0-2) jumped out to an early lead in doubles play behind a dominant performance at the No. 1 spot.
Daisy Barrow and
Renata Morales rolled to a 6-1 win, but Drury responded with wins at No. 2 and No. 3 to claim the opening point.
In singles action, Morales delivered a commanding victory at No. 2, taking down Antanina Novik in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4.
Laura Mertens followed suit with a strong showing at No. 4, defeating Ina Bechle 6-3, 6-3.
Drury (2-0) took control of the match with straight-set wins at No. 1, No. 3, and No. 5. The final point came down to court six, where
Camila de Michele battled to force a third set, but was edged out 6-3, 4-6, 1-0 in the tiebreaker.
"I really like the way the women competed today," said head coach
Tim McLane. "We're still trying to get everyone back and 100% healthy, but we are getting close, and I thought they did a good job of fighting today. We have a couple of small things to clean up, but I like where we are at heading into next weekend."
The RiverHawks continue their non-conference slate on Friday with Western New Mexico in Dallas, Texas.
