TAHLEQUAH -- Northeastern State dropped a 4-0 decision to No. 27 Midwestern State on Thursday afternoon at the NSU Tennis Courts, closing nonconference play ahead of its MIAA/GAC opener.
The Mustangs secured the doubles point by winning at No. 3 and No. 1. Juan David Duque and Jose Marquez opened with a 6-2 win over
Tomas Aramburu and
Ko Osuga at No. 3 doubles before Cesar Loeches Llamas and Bruno Sanchez sealed the point with a 7-5 victory against
Alexander Edley and
Mansur Khajimuradov at the top spot. The No. 2 doubles match featuring
Luis Denda and
James Edley was unfinished at 6-6.
Midwestern State carried that momentum into singles play, claiming three straight courts to clinch the match. Sanchez rallied past
Alexander Edley 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 at No. 2 singles, while Marquez followed with a 6-1, 7-5 win over Khajimuradov at No. 3. Duque finished the contest with a 6-2, 6-4 victory against
Baptiste Linet at No. 4.
Several matches went unfinished once the Mustangs secured the team result, including battles at No. 1, No. 5 and No. 6 singles.
Northeastern State fell to 3-4 overall with the loss and will shift focus to conference play. The RiverHawks travel to face Southern Arkansas in their MIAA/GAC opener in their next outing.
