Hot start powers RiverHawks to sweep over Washburn

TOPEKA, Kan. -- Northeastern State scored seven across the first two innings and tossed five scoreless innings from the circle to claim a 7-3 win over Washburn, clinching a sweep for the RiverHawks in their first conference doubleheader of the season.

The RiverHawks (15-8, 2-0 MIAA) built up a commanding lead from the game's early stages behind a grand slam in the first inning from Annsleigh Morris, followed by a second inning that consisted of an RBI single from Mattison Hamilton and a two-RBI single to left field from Morris. Mia Sarwinski and Emily Carpenter would score off both pieces of contact from Morris, who would find one more base hit in the form of a single in the fifth to earn her first three-hit performance as a RiverHawk.

Gracie Turner started for NSU and picked up her second win of the season after surrendering only one hit over four innings of work. Brooke Wyatt and Jensyn Elder would combine to pitch the game's last three innings. The pair each struck out a batter and did not take an earned run of damage in the win.

Washburn (23-8, 0-2 MIAA) scored a run in the third from a fielder's choice followed by two unearned in the sixth during a contest that saw NSU commit four errors.

The doubleheader sweep is NSU's first against Washburn since Mar. 7, 2017 and their first sweep to begin MIAA play since 2018. The pair of wins also give the RiverHawks eight victories across their last nine played.

The RiverHawks close the conference-opening road trip against Emporia State tomorrow with start times of 12 p.m. and 2 p.m.
