TOPEKA, Kan. -- Northeastern State dropped a heartbreaker in extra innings, falling 10-9 to Washburn in 11 innings on Friday at Steve Anson Stadium.
Northeastern State (10-20, 5-13 MIAA) totaled 18 hits and built an 8-1 lead through seven innings before Washburn mounted a late comeback to take the series opener.
The RiverHawks struck early, scoring in the first inning on an RBI single from
Alex Nirider and adding another run in the third on a
Jackson Dillingham RBI double. NSU broke the game open with three runs in the sixth and three more in the seventh, highlighted by a two-run single from
Zach Burnes to extend the lead to seven.
Burnes paced the offense, going 4-for-5 with two RBI, while
Xavier Sanchez added three hits. Dillingham and Nirider each drove in two runs as the RiverHawks produced runs in six different innings.
Bryce Parlin turned in a strong start, allowing one run on four hits over six innings with seven strikeouts.
Washburn answered in the eighth inning with five runs, including a pair of home runs, to cut the deficit to 8-6. After NSU added a run in the ninth, the Ichabods responded with three runs in the bottom half to tie the game at 9-9 and force extra innings.
The Ichabods completed the comeback in the 11th with a walk-off RBI single.
The series continues Saturday at 2 p.m.
