TAHLEQUAH, Okla. -- Northeastern State controlled the majority of the offensive play Thursday night, outshooting Missouri S&T 17-3, but the RiverHawks were unable to overcome a pair of first-half goals in a 2-1 loss at DeLoache Field.
The 14-shot advantage was Northeastern State's largest in more than a year, while Missouri S&T's three shots marked the fewest by an NSU opponent in more than a season.
Brandon Fuenmayor put the RiverHawks on the board first, scoring in the fifth minute off an assist from
Carter Adams.
Missouri S&T answered less than five minutes later when Mike Banasik scored off a pass from Luke Giesing to level the match.
Banasik struck again in the 32nd minute, this time converting a pass from Jake Salazar-Blair to give the Miners a 2-1 advantage heading into halftime.
Northeastern State continued to generate opportunities throughout the second half but could not find the equalizer. The RiverHawks tested Missouri S&T goalkeeper Cavitt Bruhn multiple times, including a pair of shots from
Miguel Carrasquinho in the final 18 minutes, but Bruhn finished with five saves.
Cameron McColloch made a key save in the second half on a shot from Missouri S&T's Juliano Costa, one of just three total shots by the Miners.
The RiverHawks finished with 17 shots and six corner kicks, while Missouri S&T recorded three shots and two corners.
Northeastern State remains at home Sunday evening when it hosts Lincoln (Mo.) at 7 p.m. at DeLoache Field.
