RiverHawks Battle Quincy in Four-Set Setback

LAWTON, Okla. -- Northeastern State volleyball earned its first set victory of the regular season Friday, but Quincy answered with three straight set wins to defeat the RiverHawks 3-1, 25-10, 23-25, 25-20, 25-16, at Aggie Gymnasium.

The RiverHawks (0-6) responded after dropping the opening set by hitting .265 in the second set, their best offensive performance of the match. Northeastern State recorded 14 kills with five errors on 34 attacks while rallying to take the set 25-23.

NSU continued to attack effectively in the third set, hitting .212 with 12 kills and five errors on 33 attempts. Quincy, however, closed out the set 25-20 before taking control of the fourth set.

Poliana Lazarini led Northeastern State with 10 kills, while Brynn Fowler added six kills and hit .222. Ceylin Sar finished with five kills, a .333 hitting percentage and four total blocks.

Sydney Dunkleberger recorded 13 assists, four service aces and four digs, while Tiyana Bhatte added 15 assists and seven digs. Cailey Grinstead contributed two service aces.

Quincy finished with a .287 hitting percentage and 46 kills. Erin Matzke led the Hawks with 13 kills, while Monika Bíliková added 11 kills and hit .647.

After Quincy pulled away early in the first set, Northeastern State battled back in the second. The RiverHawks used a late surge to erase a 23-21 deficit, scoring four of the final five points to claim the program's first regular-season set win.

The RiverHawks stayed within striking distance in the third set before Quincy pulled away late. The Hawks then used another strong start in the fourth set to complete the victory.

Northeastern State returns to action Saturday at 1 p.m. when the RiverHawks face Minot State.
