The 2017 season is the third at Northeastern State for Julian Mendez and he serves as the offensive line coach.
In 2016, Mendez’s line helped the RiverHawks throw for 2,947 yards in the air with 28 touchdowns; both are program highs in NCAA Divsison II ear for Northeastern State.
Mendez joined the NSU staff after a two-year stint at Ellsworth Community College where he also served as O-line coach. Prior to his time at ECC, he spent three years in various roles at Ottawa University. He was a volunteer in 2010, an assistant in 2011 and a graduate assistant in 2012.
Mendez played for Ottawa for his junior and senior season after transferring from Southwestern CC (Calif.).
The San Diego, California, native earned a Bachelor of Science degree in recreation and sports management from Ottawa in 2010. He also earned a Master of Education degree in intervention from his alma mater in 2013. Mendez is engaged to Sam Shaffer who serves on NSU’s softball coaching staff.
