Steve Patterson is entering his second year as the co-defensive coordinator for NSU. He directly oversees the defensive backs and calls the defensive plays.
He began his coaching career at Wilburton High School in 1991 before moving to Claremore High School in 1993. Patterson returned to his hometown of Miami, Okla., to serve as an assistant coach at Northeastern A&M College from 2000-06. He left the Golden Norsemen in 2006 for Central Oklahoma where he was the defensive coordinator for one season before being elevated to assistant head coach for the Bronchos from 2007-11.
At UCO, Patterson coached 23 All-Lone Star Conference players, two All-Americans, three LSC North Linebackers of the Year and two who played in the NCAA Division II Cactus Bowl. His 2009 defense ranked No. 5 nationally in passes intercepted, his 2008 defense was No. 20 in NCAA Division II in rushing defense and in 2007, the UCO was ranked No. 29 in total defense.
He also helped lead the Norse win the Southwest Junior College Football Conference championships in 2000, 2002 & 2003. In 2005, NEO finished the year ranked sixth en route to claiming the SJCFC co-championship at 9-3. He left the program after coaching 37 NCAA Division I-A defensive players and 52 who signed with Division I or I-AA teams.
A native of Miami, Okla., Patterson earned his bachelor’s degree at Oklahoma State in 1991 and a master’s from NSU in 2003.
