Jonathan Davis enters his third season on the Northeastern State football coaching staff.
With the guidance of Davis in his second season with the program, NSU produced one of the top pass defenses program history, recording an NCAA-era program record of 22 interceptions while holding opponents to just 16 passing touchdowns, the fewest allowed since 2010, and 188.5 passing yards per game, the program's lowest mark since 2014.
Davis coached cornerback Marvelous Owens to an All-American campaign, becoming the program's first defensive All-American since 2013 and its first First Team All-American defender since 2010. Owens recorded seven interceptions, the most by an NSU player since 1988, while adding 11 pass breakups, the program's highest total since 2019.
Davis assisted in the development of a much improved pass defense in 2024. The unit yielded 741 fewer passing yards and 24 fewer passing first downs on the season, while coming away with three interceptions in the program's first shutout victory since 2011 in a triumph over Lincoln (Ca.) on Oct. 26.
Davis spent previous time at Texas Tech, where he began as a player before transitioning to the role of student assistant in 2022. His time with the Red Raiders was preceded by a stellar high school playing career at South Oak Cliff HS in Dallas.Â
With the Golden Bears, Davis made 142 tackles across his sophomore, junior and senior seasons. He tallied a career-high 56 takedowns as a senior, with 28 solo stops and three tackles for loss alongside four pass deflections en route to first team All-District 6-5A honors. Davis also competed in track and field in high school, participating on a 4x400 relay team that finished second in district.
