WICHITA FALLS, Texas – The Northeastern State men's soccer team drew 2-2 with No. 24 Midwestern State Sunday afternoon at MSU Soccer Field.
The RiverHawks (7-3-1) were outshot 22-11, but two late goals from sophomore forward
Juan Peralta allowed the road side to earn the split with the ranked Mustangs (6-1-3).
Midwestern State entered the contest with NSU as the nation's leader in shutout percentage (0.75). The Mustangs were also fourth in the NCAA in goals against average (0.48), having conceded just five goals all year prior to today's game.
The home side took an early advantage when Len Smith scored the game's first goal in the 17th minute off an assist from Andrew Power. MSU added a second goal prior to intermission following VcMor Eligwe's strike in the 41st minute.
NSU finally broke through in the 76th minute when Peralta found the back of the net off a pass from freshman forward
Joel Mendoza.
Peralta would score again three minutes later to equalize with help from sophomore midfielder
Josue Morales.
The two teams battled through the remaining regulation time and the 20 overtime minutes, with neither able to find the game-winner.
Peralta has now scored seven goals in his last seven games. He has also put home two goals in three of his last four contests (6g-1a=13p).
Senior goalkeeper
Jordan Ladbrooke (6-3-1) made a season-high nine saves against the Mustangs. Ray Clark (3-1-3) stopped three RiverHawk shots.
Northeastern State will stay on the road for a trip to Missouri next weekend. NSU will first face Lindenwood (7-2-2, 4-0-1) at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 11 in St. Charles, Mo. The Lions are currently the top team in the MIAA standings this year with 13 points. The RiverHawks are tied with Fort Hays State for second with 12 points.
