RiverHawks Travel to No. 21 Tarleton State

Northeastern State set for treacherous three-game slate

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. – The Northeastern State women's basketball team (3-1) will travel to Stephensville, Texas, for a road matchup against No. 21 Tarleton State (1-1). Tipoff is scheduled for 5 p.m. Nov. 24 at Wisdom Gymnasium (3,000).
 
NSU lost its first game of 2012-13 in double overtime to Lubbock Christian (75-67), but the RiverHawks have since defeated Oklahoma City (66-52), Southeastern Oklahoma State (80-57) and Northwestern Oklahoma State (64-48).
 
SCOUTING THE TEXANNS
No. 21 Tarleton State currently sits at 1-1 after a victory over Texas Wesleyan (77-48) and a loss to Texas-Permian Basin (82-79). The TexAnns are led by Kiara  Wright's 18.5 ppg and 10.5 rpg. Peyton Adamson also averages 18.5 ppg, and Keyra Johnson added 5.0 ppg, 4.5 apg and 3.0 rpg.
 
LEWIS SET FOR 100, ALREADY REACHED 200. . .
Senior guard Taylor Lewis knocked down her 200th career three-point basket Nov. 20 against Northwestern Oklahoma State. The three-year letterwinner has competed in 99 career games with 65 career starts as a member of the RiverHawks. She also has 52 career double-digit scoring efforts, including a stretch sophomore year where she recorded 11 straight.
 
VETERANS PACE THE RIVERHAWKS . . .
Seven members of the Northeastern State women's basketball are currently averaging at least 5.0 points per game and six are upperclassmen . . . leading the way for NSU is senior guard Tosha Tyler, who is averaging 12.0 points per game and 3.5 rebounds per game . . . not far behind is fellow senior guard Taylor Lewis and her 11.5 ppg and 3.0 rpg . . . junior guard Katy Harsen rounds adds 9.5 ppg, and she is also grabbing 4.0 rpg . . . senior forward Sarah Green checks in at 8.3 ppg and 5.0 rpg, junior guard Taylor Collins currently sits at 6.0 ppg and junior forward Carrington Fox adds 5.5 points a night.
 
NORTHEASTERN STATE RECEIVING VOTES IN LATEST POLLS. . .
The NSU women's basketball team is currently the first team outside the top 25 in the most recent USA Today Division II Women's Basketball Top 25 Coaches' Poll released Nov. 20. The RiverHawks received 71 votes, just three shy of cracking the top 25. The team began the year at No. 23 in the preseason.
 
NSU's GIPSON IN 14TH SEASON . . .
NSU's Randy Gipson (Kentucky, '79) is in his 14th season as the RiverHawks head coach . . . he currently owns a 262-122 record at NSU . . . he has never recorded a losing season in his 13 prior campaigns at Northeastern State, and he has led the program to seven appearances in the NCAA Championship . . . his NSU women's basketball teams have earned two NCAA Sweet 16 appearances (2004, '10), while advancing to the NCAA Second Round each of the last two seasons (2011-12) . . . Gipson came to Northeastern State in 1999-00, and he captured six Lone Star Conference North Division Championships in a 12-year span . . . he also led NSU to the 2003 LSC Tournament Championship, while finishing runner up in the conference tournament on three occasions (2004, '05, '10) . . . Gipson's 2011-12 squad ranked in the top 25 nationally in eight statistical categories. NSU was second in all of NCAA Division II in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.26), fourth in turnovers per game (12.7), fifth in scoring defense (52.2), 12th in three-point field goals made per game (7.9), 13th in field-goal percentage defense (.347), 14th in won-lost percentage (.833), 23rd in assists per game (16.1), and 24th in scoring margin (11.1) . . . e began his career at Northeastern Oklahoma A&M (NEO), where he spent 11 years leading the Lady Norse . . . he took NEO to a National Runner-up finish in 1991, and he was named Region II Coach of the Year three times.
 
REACHING THE 25-WIN MARK . . .
NSU has recorded at least 25 wins and a spot in the NCAA Second Round each of the last three years . . . the RiverHawks posted a 28-7 mark in 2009-10, and they also advanced to the NCAA Sweet 16 . . . Northeastern State finished with a 25-5 record each of the last two seasons, and the team reached the NCAA Second Round both years.
 
ONE FINAL YEAR . . .
The 2012-13 campaign marks the last in Jack Dobbins Field House . . . the field house has served as the home of NSU basketball since the 1954-55 season, and Northeastern State will move into its new home beginning in 2013-14 . . . the $14.4 million event center has yet to be named and is currently under construction . . . the new home of RiverHawks basketball will seat 3,000 and will be located adjacent to Doc Wadley Stadium on the north side of the NSU campus.
 
TRIVIA NIGHT PREMIERE . . .
NSU Athletics will host “Trivia Night” on Saturday, Jan., 19, 2013, at 7:30 p.m. in the University Center's Herb Rozell Ballroom. Jay Hannah, NSU alum, will serve as master of ceremonies. This fundraising event features a fun-filled evening complete with hors d'oeuvres, beverages for purchase, a silent auction and much more.
 
MIAA CHAMPIONSHIP IN KC . . .
The 2013 MIAA Women's Basketball Championship is set to take place inside Municipal Auditorium in Kansas City, Mo. The top 12 teams in the regular season all qualify for postseason play, with the top four earning byes to Kansas City. The first round will be contested at host sites March 5, with the fifth seed hosting No. 12, the sixth seed hosting No. 11, etc. Those four winners will join the top four seeds in KC March 8-10.
 
NSU SELECTED FOURTH IN MIAA PRESEASON POLLS . . .
The Northeastern State women's basketball team was picked to finish fourth in the 2012-13 MIAA Preseason Coaches and Media Polls. The RiverHawks will be competing in their inaugural season in the MIAA, and they are coming off three-straight seasons with at least 25 wins. The top three teams from the 2011-12 campaign appear atop the polls. The top three teams selected this year mirror perfectly the way they finished the 2011-12 season and the top six in both the media and coaches polls are the same. Washburn, who won both the MIAA regular season and postseason tournament, sits atop the poll, receiving eight first place votes from both the coaches and the media. Pittsburg State, who won the NCAA South Central Regional last year, is ranked second. The third place squad is Emporia State, and the Hornets received first place votes in both polls coming in just seven points behind PSU in the coaches poll.
 
MAKING A SPLASH
The RiverHawks are entering their first season as members of the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Assocation, and the theme for the inaugural year in its new home is “Making a Splash in the MIAA”. NSU was an independent last season after spending 16 years in the Lone Star Conference.
