NSU Falls 59-57 at No. 21 Tarleton State

RiverHawks fall behind early, can’t quite complete comeback effort

STEPHENSVILLE, Texas – The Northeastern State women's basketball team dropped a narrow 59-57 decision at No. 21 Tarleton State Saturday night inside Wisdom Gymnasium.
 
The RiverHawks (3-2) fell behind 20-4 early, and the TexAnns (2-1) were able to fight off a fierce comeback from the visitors.
 
NSU shot 32 percent from the field (17-53), 30 percent from behind the three-point line (7-23) and 76 percent at the free-throw line (16-21).
 
The RiverHawks were led in scoring by senior guard Tosha Tyler, who scored 15 points in 25 minutes. Senior guard Taylor Lewis added 11 points in her 100th career game at NSU, and junior guard Katy Harsen contributed 10.
 
Tarleton State shot 44 percent from the field (19-43), 47 percent from the arc (7-15) and 74 percent at the line (14-19).
 
The TexAnns held a 37-30 rebounding advantage, but NSU had fewer turnovers (11 to 20) and more points off turnovers (26-16).
 
Peyton Adamson led the home side in scoring with 24 points, and Cheyenne Berry added 11. Kiara Wright scored eight points and hauled in a game-high 15 rebounds.
 
Despite falling behind by 16 points early, NSU battled back to within nine at 22-13 with 7:51 to play in the opening half.
 
Tarleton State again stretched its lead out to 16 before the final media timeout, and the TexAnns took a 36-24 advantage into halftime.
 
Northeastern State came out of the locker room on fire, using a 14-2 run to tie the game at 38-38 with 15:17 remaining in the contest.

The RiverHawks kept it close until Adamson drained a triple at the 8:49 mark to give the home team a 50-46 advantage. The TexAnns used the momentum to build a nine-point lead, but NSU was again able to dwindle it down to one at 57-56 with a little less than a minute to play.
 
Two three throws from Adamson gave Tarleton State a three-point advantage, and the home team would foul NSU and hold on for the two-point victory.
 
Northeastern State will now travel to No. 25 Drury for a 7 p.m. tip Nov. 28.
