HAYS, Kan. – The No. 20-ranked NSU men's soccer team was defeated 3-2 by No. 15 Fort Hays State in overtime Thursday night at FHSU Soccer Stadium.
The RiverHawks (4-2, 1-1 MIAA) lost their first league contest, despite outshooting the Tigers (6-1, 2-0) by a margin of 25-11.
Both NSU losses this season have been in overtime, and both have come in Hays as the RiverHawks lost 3-2 to Colorado Mesa Sept. 7 on neutral grounds.
Tomas Mare gave the home side the early advantage with a goal in the 27th minute off an assist from Tanner Brock.
Northeastern State entered the second half trailing for just the second time this season, but the RiverHawks would gain the lead following goals from junior midfielders
Juan Gonzalez and
Edgar Gonzaga.
Gonzalez' strike came in the 56th minute with help from sophomore midfielder
Jordan Schmoker. Gonzaga put the road team on top 2-1 in the 78th minute off an assist from senior midfielder
Henry Wildenborg.
Fort Hays State equalized in the 83rd minute when Michael Cole put away a pass from Brock, and Mare notched the golden goal in the 102nd minute with help from Carlos Linares.
Senior goalkeeper
Jordan Ladbrooke made three saves and fell to 4-2 on the year. Kent Freund stopped eight RiverHawk shots to earn the victory.
Northeastern State will stay on the road as the team travels to Bethany, Okla., for a meeting with league foe Southern Nazarene. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. Sept. 22.
