TAHLEQUAH, Okla. – The No. 24-ranked Northeastern State men's soccer team defeated Southern Nazarene 7-2 Monday night at DeLoache Field.

The RiverHawks (7-2-3, 4-1-1 MIAA) have scored 17 goals in their last two matches, while the Crimson Storm (2-12-0, 1-5-0 MIAA) has now dropped its last seven contests.

NSU outshot the visiting side by a 38-5 margin, and the home team also held a 10-0 edge in corner kicks.

Despite the one-sided affair, it was actually the Crimson Storm who struck first. Javier Caballeros finished a Josh Thomas through ball in the eighth minute to put the road side on top.

Northeastern State was unable to equalize until the 21st minute, when sophomore forward Joel Mendoza rifled a shot into the upper 90 off a deflected pass from junior forward Juan Peralta.

NSU took the lead for good in the 32nd minute when sophomore midfielder Crosby Lee sent a shot from the top of the box into the near right post following a nifty move to beat his defender by sophomore midfielder Paul Samia.

Sophomore forward Brandon Carter scored what would become the game winner in the 55th minute off a corner kick that bounced inside the box. Lee and junior defender Terence Smith both touched the ball before Carter's shot found the back of the net.

Peralta netted a penalty kick 44 seconds later, and the floodgates opened.

Junior defender Eric Crawford (57th minute), Samia (71st minute) and freshman midfielder Tyler Secrest (83rd) all scored for NSU. Thomas added a second goal for the Crimson Storm in the 59th minute, but it would be for naught.

In all, seven different RiverHawks scored, and seven different members of the team picked up an assist.

Redshirt freshman Jackson Biles (4-1-1) conceded both SNU goals but came away with the win after playing 67 minutes. Sophomore Eric Shephard closed out the match, but did not have to make a save.

SNU's Tyler Wythe (2-12) played all 90 minutes and made 11 saves. The seven goals were the most conceded by Southern Nazarene this season.

Northeastern State will travel to Hays, Kan., for a huge clash with No. 18 Fort Hays State at 7 p.m. Oct. 24.

NORTHEASTERN STATE COACH ROB CZLONKA
Statement…
"We obviously had a very good result tonight. I was disappointed that we gave up that early goal. I thought our team was not composed defensively. We moved the ball well tonight. The guys who got in played very well. I thought we finished the first half strong. Our defensive shape was great and we were pressuring the ball where we wanted to. A lot of guys got to play and we had seven different goal scorers, so it was a fun night for the team. Any time you can come out and score 17 goals and only give up two, you're going to have a lot of confidence. We've been able to rest players and give some younger guys more playing time. We still have to maintain focus and be ready to play Thursday."
