TAHLEQUAH, Okla. – The No. 9-ranked Northeastern State men's soccer team posted a 7-2 victory over Oklahoma Christian University Tuesday evening at DeLoache Field.

The nationally-ranked RiverHawks (3-0-1) were competing in their home opener, and they put on a show for the supportive crowd.

The Eagles (2-1) jumped on top in the eighth minute, but NSU scored two markers before halftime to send the home side into the locker room with a 2-1 edge.

OCU equalized in the 50th minute, but RiverHawk goals in the 51st, 57th and 58th minutes would finally put away the pesky visitors from Oklahoma City. NSU would also tack on goals in the 68th and 85th minutes.

"Attack-wise, our guys were in the groove. When we switch the point of attack and we have our head on a swivel, we can really move the ball well," NSU coach Rob Czlonka said. "Getting goals from a variety of players was awesome. It was great to see the Schmoker twins each having a good night. They're a huge part of our team. We also had a lot of young guys doing well."

Northeastern State outshot the Eagles by a 37-6 margin and led 9-2 in corner kicks.

Junior forward Juan Peralta and junior defender Adam Schmoker both scored twice. Other goal scorers included junior forward Jordan Schmoker and sophomore forwards Paul Samia and Brandon Carter.

Jordan Schmoker, senior midfielder Juan Gonzalez and sophomore forward Joel Mendoza all finished with two assists.

"Defensively, we still have some things we need to sharpen up," Czlonka said. "I was very disappointed with the two goals we allowed. We need to be better defending set pieces and corners."

Sophomore goalkeeper Eric Shephard improved to 3-0-1 on the year after stopping two shots on goal and allowing two. Evan Helker (1-1) played the final 45 minutes for OCU and took the loss after conceding five goals and finishing with seven saves.

Northeastern State is now set to head to Searcy, Ark., to open conference play at Harding. The RiverHawks and Bisons will lock up at 5 p.m. Sept. 20.
