TAHLEQUAH, Okla. – The No. 6-ranked Northeastern State men's soccer team played to a 2-2 draw with rival Fort Hays State Thursday night at DeLoache Field.
Â
The RiverHawks (3-0-2, 0-0-1 MIAA) remained unbeaten this season and were playing their first conference match of the year. The No. 21-ranked Tigers (5-1-1, 1-0-1 MIAA) were able to battle back from 2-0 down to earn the tie despite being outshot 24-16.
Â
"This is a good rivalry, and tonight was a good match," NSU coach
Rob Czlonka said. "We didn't play our sharpest tonight. Our touches were off and our passes weren't as crisp as I would like. Fort Hays played us better than most other teams have, and teams can take advantage of us if we're not playing our best."
Â
Junior forward
Juan Peralta scored the first goal of the match in the ninth minute. He was assisted by both junior midfielder
Jordan Schmoker and sophomore midfielder
Crosby Lee.
Â
Schmoker leads the entire nation in assists per game (1.4 apg) and now has seven helpers this season.
Â
Sophomore forward
Brandon Carter came on as a substitute in the 33rd minute and was effectively immediately as he put away his second marker of the season in the 38th minute. Lee also assisted on that goal.
Â
Fort Hays State trailed 2-0 at the break, but a sliding tackle in the box in the 59th minute allowed the Tigers to cut the deficit in half following a penalty kick from Daniel Peralta.
Â
The marker sparked what became the game-tying comeback, as Jaccob Rangel equalized in the 75th minute from Ricardo Yeverino and the two teams played out the remainder of the contest without a game winner.
Â
The penalty kick from FHSU's Peralta reenergized the Tigers and allowed the visitors to mount the comeback. When the two teams met in Tahlequah during the regular season last year, it was Juan, Daniel's younger brother, who scored a game-tying PK in the 82nd minute to lift the RiverHawks to a 1-1 draw.
Â
With the tie, NSU remains unbeaten (2-0-2) at home against FHSU over the last three years. The two teams are now 2-2-2 overall over that span.
Â
The Peralta brothers have a combined eight goals in the rivalry, with Juan leading Daniel 5-3 as they both added to their totals tonight.
Â
Northeastern State will remain home for a 1 p.m. matchup Sept. 28 against Southern Nazarene.
