HAYS, Kan. – The Northeastern State women's soccer team lost to Fort Hays State 1-0 in a conference matchup on the road Friday evening at FHSU Soccer Stadium.
The two teams played a scoreless first half, but Kelsey Steffens found the back of the net on a 76th minute counterattack marker to put the home team in front. That goal would prove enough as the Tigers (6-4-1, 4-2-1 MIAA ) were able to shut down the RiverHawks (6-5, 3-4 MIAA).
NSU was outshot by Fort Hays State 8-3 in the first half. Shots were even in the second half, as both teams put up three shots, but the RiverHawks were unable to capitalize on their chances.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Jordan Woodruff (6-5) was tagged with the loss. She played all 90 minutes while making six saves and allowing the lone goal.
Northeastern State will stay on the road to take on Nebraska-Kearney on Oct. 12. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Foster Field.
Northeastern State Coach Chase WootenStatement…"I thought at times we defended well, we just weren't winning the first ball as much as we wanted to. We came out with some dangerous chances but we didn't capitalize on them and couldn't sustain our momentum. Hays played well, they were locked in and able to find their forwards down the field. On the goal, it was a chance for us that led to a counter attack. It was unlucky how we conceded. We had some chances but just couldn't get it done. We just need to focus on Nebraska-Kearney now and get a win up there."
