KEARNEY, Neb. – The Northeastern State women's soccer team lost to the University of Nebraska-Kearney 2-1 in a road MIAA matchup Sunday afternoon at Cope Stadium.

Kadie Walaszczyk put the home team in front in the 18th minute.  The Lopers would double their lead in the 41st minute when Jillian Stoumbaugh found the back of the net. Sophomore goalkeeper Jordan Woodruff saved a penalty kick, but the ball was not cleared and Stoumbaugh pounced on the loose ball. This was just the second time this season UNK scored two goals in a match.

The score remained the same until the 88th minute when Hailey Colberg scored her first career goal. The junior defender's marker came off a direct free kick from 30 yards to close the gap to 2-1.

The RiverHawks (6-6, 3-5 MIAA) were unable to score again as the Lopers (2-8-1, 2-6 MIAA) held on to earn their second MIAA victory.

UNK held a slight 11-10 edge over Northeastern State in shots. The RiverHawks held a 10-3 advantage in corner kicks, but were unable to capitalize. The 10 corner kicks were the most for NSU since a 1-0 victory over Missouri Western on Oct. 6, 2013.

Sophomore goalkeeper Jordan Woodruff (6-6) played all 90 minutes, making four saves and allowing two goals.

Northeastern State will return home to take on Lindenwood on Oct. 17. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at DeLoache Field.

NORTHEASTERN STATE COACH CHASE WOOTEN
Initial Statement…
"We played much better today than we did on Friday. We were a bit unlucky and didn't get a lot of bounces. The first goal was unfortunate; it was a cross that just sort of ended up as a goal. That took some of our momentum.  The second goal came off a saved penalty kick that wasn't cleared. We've worked on that before but just didn't get the job done. The way they played slowed the game down a lot. There were a lot of fouls and we couldn't get into a rhythm."

On having chances…
"We had plenty of chances. We hit the post in the first half and that would have tied it up and changed the game. We had chances in the second half. We had some open shots that we just didn't put away. We didn't catch any breaks, but we need to start making our own luck."

On the upcoming schedule…
"We've got a tough couple of games coming up. We definitely played really hard today and played much better. It will be nice to be home and we'll work hard to bring the same intensity we played with today."
