JOPLIN, Mo. – The Northeastern State women's soccer team defeated Missouri Southern State University 2-1 Saturday afternoon at Hal Bodon Field.
The RiverHawks (7-9, 4-8 MIAA) halted a five-game losing streak and beat the Lions (5-9-2, 3-8-1 MIAA) for the second time this season. Northeastern State now owns a 7-2-1 mark against Missouri Southern since 2000.
NSU fell behind just 47 seconds into the match minute when Karley Thomas scored for Missouri Southern.
Julia Mathis pulled the RiverHawks level in the 27th minute. The freshman midfielder's first career goal was assisted by sophomore forward
McKenna Jetton. Â Â
The RiverHawks took the lead in the 71st minute. Sophomore defender
Rachel Gleason was able to get a head on a corner from junior midfielder
McKenzie Musella. The goal was the first of the season for Gleason and her first career game-winning goal.
NSU outshot MSSU 12-8 and had a 5-3 edge in corner kicks. Â Sophomore goalkeeper
Jordan Woodruff moved to 7-9 on the season. She made three saves in 90 minutes while allowing the lone goal.
Northeastern State will next be on the road to take on University of Central Oklahoma at 3 p.m. Oct. 31 in Edmond, Oklahoma.

We played smart soccer and created a lot of great chances for ourselves. I'm really happy with how we played today."

On being able to come back after giving up an early goal…"We showed great mental fortitude after giving up that goal. It was great for our young team to learn how to come back from something like that. We stepped up and finished the job we came to do. We were on our heels, but I'm proud of how we came back."
