TAHLEQUAH, Okla. – The Northeastern State women's basketball team fell 56-52 in overtime to Washburn Saturday afternoon inside the NSU Event Center.
Â
The RiverHawks (10-12, 7-8 MIAA) dropped to 0-4 in overtimes this season, while the Ichabods (15-8, 10-6 MIAA) improved to 2-0 in extra sessions.
Â
Senior forward
Carrington Fox finished the game with six blocks, moving her into first place on the all-time block charts in Northeastern State history. She now has 124 in her career, pushing her three clear of Gaile Cook (1989-91). Sophomore
Kate Bellamy led NSU with a career-high 15 points, and she was the only member of the team in double figures.
Â
The RiverHawks shot 26.6 percent (17-for-64) from the field, 23.8 percent (10-for-42) from downtown and 80 percent (8-for-10) at the free-throw line. The 42 three-point attempts broke the school record for most three's attempted in a single game. The previous mark was 35.
Â
The Ichabods shot 33.3 percent (21-for-63) from the field, 22.7 percent (5-for-22) from downtown and 50 percent (9-for-18) at the free-throw line. WU was led by Brittney Lynch, who finished with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Taylor Ignoto scored 14 points, and Kara Lee and Honor Duvall both had 11 rebounds.
Â
Freshman forward
Che'Ron Lewis made two free throws at the 16:06 mark of the first half to put NSU on top 7-6, and the home team maintained the lead through the rest of the opening 20 minutes. The green and white took a 27-19 advantage into the locker room, and the point total for the Ichabods was the lowest scored in a first half since a 16-point effort against Missouri Western State on Dec. 19, 2010.
Â
Bellamy knocked down a triple coming out of the break to give NSU an 11-point lead, which would be the largest lead of the game. Washburn then ventured on a 15-3 run that saw the visitors take its first lead (34-33) since early in the ballgame.
Â
NSU used a strong effort to regain the advantage and take a 45-36 advantage with 4:37 to play, but the Ichabods closed the half on a 9-0 run – capped by a Lynch jumper with three seconds left in regulation after an NSU turnover – to force overtime.
Â
WU jumped out to a 52-47 lead in the extra frame, but NSU fought back to tie the game at 52-52 with 52 seconds left. Washburn outplayed the home team in the final minute, however, to earn the four-point road victory.
Â
NSU will play host to Pittsburg State at 5:30 p.m. Feb. 19 in the last home game of the regular season.

NORTHEASTERN STATE COACH RANDY GIPSON
Opening Statement…
"Those are the kind of games really hurt. It was a struggle all day because we didn't make shots very well. We felt like we should have been ahead by a lot more than we were. We were still in control of the game and we just didn't finish. The turnover (five-second call) really hurt us late in the game. We just weren't organized as well as we should have been to get the ball in play. It was just a bad play for us. It was a bad finish to regulation. You just have to pick yourself back up. This team has had to work for everything they've gotten this year. We have our last home game coming up Wednesday. We just have to fight back and keep competing."
Â
On setting the school record for most three-point attempts in a single game…
"We feel like we have good shooters taking those shots. I don't think very many of them were bad shots. Most of them were within the rhythm of the offense. We just didn't shoot it very well."
Â
On Carrington Fox breaking the school record for career blocks…
"She's been a stellar defender for us. She plays with great effort and has a great presence on the defensive end. She's deserving of any record that she can set."
