NSU opens the season with a W

Northeastern State defeats Northwestern Oklahoma State 61-43

ALVA, Okla. – The Northeastern State women's basketball team kicked off the 2015-16 campaign with a 61-43 victory over Northwestern Oklahoma State Friday night inside Percefull Fieldhouse.

The contest was the first of the year for both programs and was part of the 2015 MIAA/GAC Basketball Challenge, which is being hosted by NWOSU this season.

NSU's two leading scorers were both newcomers to the team, and the third in double figures was a player who saw limited minutes last season.

Leading the way was true freshman guard Kylie Looney, who connected on all four of her 3-point attempts and finished with 14 points in 19 minutes off the bench. Junior forward Mary Jane Buschmann registered 13 points on 6-of-11 shooting and eight rebounds, and sophomore guard Miranda Griffin added a career-high 11 points.

Kamera Bozeman was the lone Ranger in double figures, and she finished with 14 points and 11 rebounds.

Northeastern State scored the first five points of the game, but the home team used a 12-6 run to take its first lead of 12-11 early in the second quarter. The two squads battled back and forth for the remainder of the opening half, but a quick 8-3 run to end the half allowed the RiverHawks to carry a 26-22 advantage into intermission.

NSU never trailed in the second half and didn't hold its largest lead of 18 points until the final margin of 61-43.

This was the first game for the RiverHawks using the new four-quarter system implemented by the NCAA for this season. Women's collegiate basketball no longer plays two 20-minute halves. Rather, they now compete in four 10-minute quarters.

Northeastern State shot 35.5 percent (22-for-62) from the field, 38.9 percent (7-for-18) from behind the 3-point line and 76.9 percent (10-for-13) at the free-throw line. Northwestern Oklahoma State finished at 24.2 percent (15-for-62) overall, 9.1 percent (2-for-22) from behind the arc and 78.6 percent (11-for-14) at the charity stripe.

NSU outrebounded NWOSU 45-44 and led 26-15 in points off the bench.

The RiverHawks will wrap up play in the MIAA/GAC Challenge with a 6 p.m. contest Nov. 14 against Southeastern Oklahoma State.
