PITTSBURG, Kan. – The Northeastern State baseball team swept a pair of games over Pittsburg State Saturday afternoon at Al Ortolani Field. The victories also gave NSU three of four wins in the series against the Gorillas.
The RiverHawks (4-1) won the first game 4-1 and defeated Pitt State (3-5) 8-3 in the series finale. In a day that saw only four extra-base hits total between the two teams (all doubles), NSU was able to manufacture enough runs to secure both victories. The visitors also used four timely double plays on the day and had multiple diving catches to halt any potential momentum for the home team.
Northeastern State had a total of 15 hits on the day. Nine different RiverHawks came away with at least one hit, and six of those nine had two hits.
Sophomore
Caleb Hill recorded the most production as he finished with four runs batted in, while junior
Charles Sims scored three runs total.
NSU is now scheduled for a single home game against Rogers State at 1 p.m. Feb. 17.
NORTHEASTERN STATE 4, PITTSBURG STATE 1Senior
Kyle Shambaugh threw a gem in the first game of the series. He picked up his second win on the mound this year after allowing just two hits across 6.0 innings of work. He gave up just one run, while also striking out three and walking four.
Pittsburg State held a momentarily lead in the contest when Logan Terrell drove home Nate Arnold in the bottom of the second inning.
A fielding error by the Gorillas in the top of the fourth helped NSU take the lead. Sims drove home junior
Jamie Graeser after he reached base on the error. Junior
Gabriel Wurth used an RBI bunt single to score the go-ahead run.
Hill recorded a two-out, two-run double down the left field line in the sixth to tack on a pair of insurance runs, and freshman closer
Jake Kern threw a perfect seventh to earn the save and close the door on the Gorillas.
Matt Standlee (0-2) suffered the loss on the mound. He conceded a pair of unearned runs on five hits in 4.0 innings. Dylan Donley and Blake Vail also threw in relief. Jordan Rice and Terrell were the only two members of the home team to record a hit.
NORTHEASTERN STATE 8, PITTSBURG STATE 3The RiverHawks plated four in the fourth and added another pair in the fourth to earn the series victory. Pitt State scored three runs in the first three innings but was unable to touch home plate again.
The Gorillas went ahead for the second-straight game when Derek Hackney scored on a two-out double from Andrew Vogelbaugh in the bottom of the first. NSU responded in the top of the second when a single up the middle from senior
Jorge Ozuna brought home junior
Cody Begovich. Begovich doubled down the right field line with two outs.
Sophomore
Licio Tamburlini jumpstarted NSU's big third inning when he stole both third base and home after singling up the middle. Graeser hit a two-run double to plate both sophomore
Jared Aschbrenner and Wurth, and he later scored on an infield single from Begovich. Begovich popped up a can of corn to second base, but the wind altered the path of the ball and it was misjudged by the infielders. Because there were two outs, Graeser was wisely sprinting around the base paths while the ball was in the air. He was able to score before the Gorilla defense could throw him out at home.
The only other run in the game came in the final inning, when NSU was able to tack on one more insurance tally. Wurth singled to left field and was moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. He then took third on a passed ball and later scored on a groundout.
Sophomore
Bobby Sehgal (1-0) picked up the win after tossing the first 6.0 innings. He gave up three runs on five hits, while striking out two and walking one. Senior
Hayden Walch only gave up one hit across the next 2.0 innings, and Kern again threw the final frame.
Christian Cedeno (0-1) was tagged with the loss after giving up seven runs (four earned) on six hits in the first 3.0 innings. Nick Brandecker gave PSU a solid hitless 5.0 innings of relief, and Aaron Snow threw the final frame.
