BENTONVILLE, Ark. – The Northeastern State softball team earned two victories on the second day of the 2015 8-State Classic at Memorial Park.
The RiverHawks (4-4) defeated Northwestern Oklahoma State (4-4) 7-3 before beating Oklahoma Panhandle State (5-6) 10-0 in five innings. Â
Eight RiverHawks recorded multiple hits on the day, while five players had at least three hits. Freshman outfielder
Jessica Boone and sophomore shortstop Maddie Boyd were 4-for-7. Senior designated player
Alli Eales, freshman first baseman
Paige Gann and freshman outfielder
Bailey Applegate were 3-for-7 on the day.
The remaining games of the 8-State Classic on Feb. 15 have been cancelled due to inclement weather. Northeastern State will next return home to host the NSU Softball Festival at RiverHawks Park Feb. 20-22.
NORTHEASTERN STATE 7, NORTHWESTERN OKLAHOMA STATE 3The RiverHawks jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. NSU added two more the next inning to hold a 4-0 advantage.
Northeastern State plated an additional run in the fourth inning when Gann hit an RBI double to the center field fence. The RiverHawks then added two insurance runs in the top of the seventh when senior
Talia Lattimore got her first career hit and RBI and Boone recorded her third run batted in of the game.
The Rangers were able to score three runs in the seventh inning to close the final margin to 7-3 in favor of NSU. Â
The RiverHawks collected 15 hits for the second straight game.
Junior pitcher
Kayce Wooldridge (1-1) threw 7.0 innings and conceded three runs on five hits. She struck out three and walked one. In the first six innings, Wooldridge held NWOSU to one hit. Â
NORTHEASTERN STATE 10, OKLAHOMA PANHANDLE STATE 0 (5 INNINGS)The RiverHawks continued their offensive aggression in the second game of the day, plating two runs in the first inning.
NSU added five more runs in the second inning, including two on a
Kaleigh Hinkle home run to center field. The bomb was the third of the year for the freshman catcher.
Applegate led off the third inning with her first career home run, which chased Aggie starting pitcher Samantha Arledge from the game. The RiverHawks tacked on two additional runs in the inning to extend their lead to 10-0.
The Northeastern State defense held OPSU to no runs to earn the five-inning victory.
Junior
Delaney Gray (1-1) got the victory for the RiverHawks. She allowed no runs on three hits in 5.0 innings in the circle. Gray struck out three Aggies and walked one.
