Softball drops conference openers

Missouri Western State sweeps doubleheader

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. – The Northeastern State softball team lost two games to Missouri Western State at RiverHawks Park Saturday afternoon.

The RiverHawks (8-10) lost to Missouri Western State (9-7) 7-1 before falling 12-3 in five innings.  

Sophomore Madison Boyd (3-for-5) recorded three hits on the day. Sophomore Ryan Martin and freshman Bailey Applegate each had two hits, while freshman Jessica Boone, freshman Paige Gann and freshman Kaleigh Hinkle recorded hits.

Northeastern State will next host a doubleheader against Northwest Missouri State at RiverHawks Park March 8. The first game is set to begin at noon.

MISSOURI WESTERN STATE 7, NORTHEASTERN STATE 1
The game remained scoreless until the third inning, when the Griffons scored four runs on six hits. They pushed across two more in the fourth inning to extend their lead to 6-0.

Northwest Missouri State added an additional insurance run in the top of the seventh inning.

The RiverHawks were able to get one run back in the bottom of the seventh inning on an Applegate solo homerun.

Junior Kayce Wooldridge (4-4) took the loss for the RiverHawks in her shortest outing of the year. She threw 2.2 innings and conceded four runs on six hits. She struck out two and walked one. Junior Alex Files threw 0.2 innings in relief, allowing two runs on four hits. Krissy Crow threw the final 3.2 innings in the circle for NSU. The sophomore allowed one run on four hits. She struck out two.  

MISSOURI WESTERN STATE 12, NORTHEASTERN STATE 3
The score remained knotted 0-0 through the second inning. For the second straight game, Missouri Western State had a big third inning. They scored 10 runs, including four off a Kailey Green grand slam.

The Griffons plated an additional run in the fourth inning, before the RiverHawks were able to get three back in the bottom of the fourth.

Missouri Western pushed across another run in the top of the fifth. NSU was unable to muster a comeback, and the Griffons earned the run-rule shortened victory, 12-3.

Senior Laura Fleck (1-1) took the loss in her first start of the season. She allowed seven runs on nine hits in 4.1 innings pitched. She struck out two and walked one. Junior Delaney Gray gave up three runs on two hits in relief and sophomore Krissy Crow allowed two runs on three hits in 0.2 innings.
