Game 2 Box ScoreJEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – The Northeastern State baseball team earned two victories over Lincoln University Friday afternoon at LU Baseball Field.
The RiverHawks (21-14, 14-12 MIAA) defeated the Blue Tigers (2-32, 1-21 MIAA) 10-2 in game one before winning 15-1 in a run-rule shortened second game. The sweep gave NSU coach
Travis Janssen victory No. 100 at the helm of the program.
Junior
Cody Begovich only played the second game but went 3-for-5 with five RBI and his first-career two-home run game. Junior
Charles Sims (4-for-6) recorded four hits, while junior
Gabriel Wurth and sophomore
Bryce Davenport each had three hits on the day. Four other RiverHawks had multihit days.
The series will conclude with a doubleheader that is set to begin at 1 p.m. April 11.
NORTHEASTERN STATE 10, LINCOLN 2The RiverHawks jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning when Davenport hit a three-run home run to center field.
The Blue Tigers got one run back in the third inning, but the green and white responded with five runs of their own in the top of the fourth inning.
Lincoln pushed one run across in the bottom of the fourth inning on a solo home run by Trevor Schnieders, which was the only extra-base hit allowed by the RiverHawks.
NSU added two additional insurance runs in the top of the sixth inning to push the score to 10-2.
Sophomore
Ryan Helsley (6-2) earned the complete game victory. He conceded two runs (one earned) on six hits while striking out five and walking one.
NORTHEASTERN STATE 15, LINCOLN 1Northeastern State scored first in the second game, taking a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning when Wurth stole home. The RiverHawks added three more runs in the second inning.
Begovich hit his first home run of the day, a two-run shot to center field, in the third inning to extend NSU's lead to 6-0.
The RiverHawks exploded for eight runs in the sixth inning, three of which came on Begovich's second home run, this time a three-run homer to left center field.
Jamie Graeser also hit a home run in the inning.
The Blue Tigers pushed across one run in the bottom of the sixth inning on an RBI ground out by Dillon Walker.
NSU added an additional run in the top of the seventh inning when Graeser hit an RBI single through the left side, bringing
Derek Shedden around to score.
Senior
Kyle Shambaugh (6-0) earned the victory for the RiverHawks. He allowed one run on four hits in 6.0 innings pitched. He struck out five Blue Tigers while walking four. Sophomore
Zach Poehl threw 1.0 hitless innings in relief, striking out two.
The victory was the 100th game won by
Travis Janssen as a coach of the RiverHawks.
