NSU falls to Wonder Boys in rain-shortened contest

Northeastern State drops 7-2 decision to Arkansas Tech at Rousey Field Tuesday afternoon

Box Score

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. – The Northeastern State baseball team lost 7-2 to Arkansas Tech in nonconference action Tuesday afternoon at Rousey Field.

The contest was called after just six innings due to persistent rain in the Tahlequah area. The RiverHawks fell to 23-15 on the season, while the Wonder Boys improved to 24-17.

The scoring began in the top of the second inning when a single through the right side by Mark Vaughn plated Cole Fergus. Fergus also hit a two-run homer in the third, and the visitors tacked on three more in the fourth to pull ahead 6-0. NSU responded with a pair of tallies in the fifth, but the game was called before the RiverHawks could mount any sort of a comeback.

NSU had three hits in the contest that were split up between seniors Preston Cash and Licio Tamburlini, and junior Charles Sims. Sims finished with an RBI and one run scored.

Kris Ayers led ATU with a 2-for-3 effort. Patrick Castleberry finished with three RBI, while Fergus had two RBI and scored twice.

Aaron Johnson (2-2) threw the first 5.0 innings and earned the win on the mound. He struck out five and walked four, while conceding just two runs on three hits.

Sophomore Bobby Sehgal (3-4) was saddled with the loss after allowing one run on two hits in the first inning.

Northeastern State will now travel to Warrensburg, Missouri, for a four-game MIAA series with Central Missouri that will begin with a 3 p.m. doubleheader April 16.
