Baseball loses twice to Central Missouri

Northeastern State gives up three 3-run leads, falls by margins of 7-3, 15-10 Thursday

WARRENSBURG, Mo. – The Northeastern State baseball team lost to Central Missouri twice Thursday evening at Crane Stadium.
 
The RiverHawks (23-17, 16-14 MIAA) lost the first game 7-3 and the Mules (25-16, 20-10 MIAA) won the second game 15-10. NSU held a three-run lead in the first game and had two separate three-run leads in the second game before UCM came back to win both.
 
The two squads will complete the series with a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. April 17.
 
CENTRAL MISSOURI 7, NORTHEASTERN STATE 3
The Mules were held off the scoreboard for the first two frames, and NSU scored three in the top of the third to take a 3-0 advantage. UCM responded with four in the home half of the frame and added three more in the fifth to pull ahead 7-3. Northeastern State could not find a way to score in any of the final four innings.
 
NSU had just five hits in the contest, and they were hit by five different members of the team. Senior Licio Tamburlini had the lone RBI and three different RiverHawks scored.
 
Sophomore Ryan Helsley (6-3) suffered his third loss in his last four outings after giving up six runs on eight hits across 4.0 frames. Sophomore Dustin Berrong tossed the fifth inning and senior Clay Debban threw the sixth.
 
Carlos D'Armas (2-1) threw a complete game and gave up three unearned runs on five scattered hits. Tony Sandifer was 3-for-3 with a pair of runs scored, while Bennett Oliver was 1-for-3 with a team-best two RBI. Derek Cornell and Trevor Jones also had two hits and combined for three runs scored.
 
CENTRAL MISSOURI 15, NORTHEASTERN STATE 10
Northeastern State enjoyed a brief 5-2 lead after the team batted in the fourth inning. The Mules quickly tied the game in the bottom of the fourth, but NSU then went back on top 9-6 following the top of the seventh. After the seventh-inning stretch, UCM erupted for seven runs in its half of the inning and never looked back.
 
Senior Kyle Shambaugh left with the lead intact after conceding six runs on eight hits in the first 5.0 innings. Senior Hayden Walch (1-1) proceeded to suffer the loss after allowing four runs on four hits in 1.2 innings. Sophomore Gabe Coldwell faced four batters and was unable to record an out, conceding three runs on three hits and one walk. Sophomore Bobby Sehgal gave up two runs in the final 1.1 frames.
 
Senior Preston Cash was 1-for-5 at the plate with a three-run homer and two runs scored. Sophomore Bryce Davenport finished 3-for-3 with an RBI and a run. Junior Charles Sims and Tamburlini also had two of NSU's 11 hits.
 
Paul McMahon (1-1) came on in relief to pick up the win after Tyler House gave up five runs on seven hits in the first 4.0 innings. Trevor Ezell allowed three runs on two hits in 1.1 innings before being ejected, and Lucas Williams threw the final two innings for the home team.
 
Oliver was 4-for-5 with three RBI and two runs, while Jones and Jackson Schnurbusch both had three hits and combined for four RBI and four runs scored. Dylan Farrell finished with four RBI, and Colton Hilbrenner was 2-for-4 with two RBI and three runs.
