Upset bid falls short in Pueblo

RiverHawks men’s soccer falls 2-1 to No. 12 Colorado State University – Pueblo

PUEBLO, Colo. – The No. 24-ranked Northeastern State men's soccer team dropped a narrow 2-1 road decision to No. 12 Colorado State – Pueblo Friday night at Gonzales Stadium.

The RiverHawks (2-1) surrendered their first contest of the season, while the ThunderWolves (3-0) remained unblemished.

Neither team could crack the opposing defensive code in the first half, and it was the home side that broke through in the 69th minute. Sam Glawe scored an unassisted goal to give CSU-Pueblo the 1-0 edge.

Junior midfielder Jonathan Guzman equalized in the 84th minute, but a red card four minutes later would doom the RiverHawks. Zach Davis scored the game-winning goal in the 89th minute. The sending off was the first for an NSU player since the 2011 season.

The ThunderWolves held a 15-10 shot advantage and led 7-1 in corners.

Senior goalkeeper Eric Shephard (2-1) finished with six saves and suffered the loss. Sam Haseltine (3-0) earned the win for CSUP after stopping three shots.

Northeastern State will remain in Colorado for a 3:30 p.m. date Sept. 13 with Metro State.
