TAHLEQUAH, Okla. – The No. 21-ranked Northeastern State men's soccer team collected a 2-1 come-from-behind victory over Missouri S&T Sunday afternoon at DeLoache Field.
Â
The RiverHawks closed out the opening weekend with a 2-0 record, while the Miners fell to 0-2 on the young campaign.
Â
The two teams had to battle a heat index that surpassed 100 degrees, and there were two rare water breaks in the middle of both halves to try to combat the heat.
Â
The visitors came out the aggressor early and were able to find the back of the net in the 10th minute. Felipe Andrade got a free run behind the defense and finished low left as MST took the 1-0 advantage.
Â
The Miners carried the lead all the way into the final 20 minutes, but the RiverHawks took over from there.
Â
Sophomore midfielder
Trevor Reed equalized in the 73rd minute when he took a shot from the left that trickled past the line after the keeper was unable to handle the shot. He then potted the game winner two minutes later after he dribbled around a handful of defenders and finished low left post.
Â
Reed now has four goals through the first two matches and has already doubled his goal production from his freshman campaign. Junior midfielder
Jonathan Guzman earned an assist on the first goal.
Â
Senior goalkeeper
Eric Shephard (2-0) collected his 12th career win between the pipes after saving five shots in 90 minutes. Nick Posey (0-1) took the loss for Missouri S&T after letting in both goals and finishing with four saves.
Â
NSU outshot MST 17-11 and held a 6-3 edge in corner kicks.
Â
The RiverHawks will now travel west for a pair of road battles next weekend in Colorado. The first match will pit NSU against Colorado State University – Pueblo and is slated to kickoff at 6:30 p.m. (CST) Sept. 11.

NORTHEASTERN STATE COACH ROB CZLONKAOn the performance of Trevor Reed…"Trevor's a dynamic player. We're excited to have him. He's picked the right moments to shine for us. Taking us from nil-nil and putting us up two goals two nights ago, and then today to bring us from being a goal down to being a goal ahead. That's big time."
Â
On the stagnancy of the first 70 minutes…"I think there were a whole lot of things happening in our guy's heads. We were trying to be smart about the heat, as it's an issue today. In our own personal expectations and how we think we should play, we got caught up in trying to possess the ball and play short going forward and we got frustrated. Once we sorted out how to get around their press things opened up for us and that's how the game went. I thought there were some good moments throughout the game of us attacking and us defending, but it took us until that last 20 minutes to finally find the back of the net."
Â
On Eric Crawford and the rest of the captains…"Those guys are hard to find. That's what can really take a team as far as it's talent can take it. It's one thing to have a coaching staff to try to push the cart, but when you've got your players having strong leadership within the team and pushing that cart forward and getting everyone else to chip in and do it too, that's priceless."
