NSU's late run comes up short in opener

EDMOND – Northeastern State got within a possession of Southeastern Oklahoma in the final minutes on Friday afternoon but they would fall 71-62 in Edmond. 
 
Montre' Williams paced NSU with 16 points and Karon Waller was the team's second player in double-digits scoring 14 points. 
 
The RiverHawks (0-1) forced 25 Southeastern turnovers where they scored 24 of their points off of.  The rebounding battle was a difference on Friday afternoon with the Savage Storm having 19 extra boards with 39 overall.  NSU was also limited to a pair of second chance points while Southeastern had 15 on the RiverHawks.
 
Southeastern Oklahoma (1-0) shot 68.4-percent in the second half and led as many as 13 points with 5:51 left in the contest.   Despite the hot shooting by the Storm, the RiverHawks quickly found themselves in the game with ten unanswered points in the next two minutes.  Waller had a pair of shots and Williams knocked down back-to-back treys to cut the gap to 61-58. 
 
However, Southeastern responded back with a seven point run to halt the NSU late threat.
 
The RiverHawks shot 41.1 percent from the field and 36.4-percent from long range.  Southeastern finished the contest going 55.6-percent from the field and 60-percent at the arc.   
 
Northeastern State had 13 steals with Tanner Mouse having three and he dished out four assists.  Juvon Turner scored nine points to lead NSU off the bench in his first outing in a RiverHawks uniform and all eleven who entered the contest scored.
 
Southeastern Oklahoma had three in double-digits with Tyler Lonzie leading both squads with 19 points.
 
Friday's game was hosted by Central Oklahoma in the third year of the MIAA/GAC Challenge; the RiverHawks will face Northwestern Oklahoma on Sunday at 3 p.m. to wrap up the league crossover.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- This was the 21st double digit game for Montre' Williams and he has ten or more points in six of his last seven games.
- Tanner Mouse had a career high four assists.
- First time since Jan. 9, 2016 against Emporia State that the RiverHawks had 11 different scores and each player scoring.
- NSU led in fast break points 10-to-5 and outscored the Storm 35-to-18 off the bench.
