BOLIVAR, Mo. –
Cameron Martin scored 14 points for the RiverHawks but Southwest Baptist's second chance points helped lead to a 65-53 road loss on Saturday. Â Â The Bearcats outscored Northeastern State 17-to-5 on their second chance with the assistance of 13 offensive rebounds.Â
Behind Martin's 14, NSU didn't have another player in double-figures with
Montre' Williams coming in next with seven points; the RiverHawks had four with six points apiece.
The RiverHawks made nine shots in each half and shot 34-percent (18-53) from the field. From long range, they went 2-for-12, and didn't connect in all three opportunities in the second half.  Southwest Baptist didn't shoot the ball well either going 38.5-percent (20-52) on their side of the floor and went 6-for-23 from long range.Â
Javon Wallace and
Karon Waller led NSU with six rebounds each.Â
Romone Adderley had six points, three rebounds, and a pair of assists in his NSU debut.
Northeastern State trailed for the majority of the first half with the Bearcats never getting more than two possessions ahead.  The RiverHawks forced 11 turnovers and scored nine of their points off. Both teams had a pair of three-pointers and they went a combined 4-for-20.
In the second half, the RiverHawks closed on the Bearcats with
Montre' Williams getting NSU within two (36-34) with 12:25 left but a SBU three-pointer halted the momentum. Later on, Martin got Northeastern State back by three (41-38) with 10:30 left but back-to-back three pointers by the Bearcats extended the lead back out to nine.  Northeastern State never could get closer the rest of the way with nether team shooting the ball well with only one made shot from the field in the final five minutes, 18 of the last 21 points by either team was made at the free throw line.
Southwest Baptist (6-3, 1-1 MIAA) had three hitting double-figures with Kai Woodfall scoring a game high 17 points.
Saturday's loss will send NSU to 2-7 and 1-2 in MIAA play.
Northeastern State will return to the floor on Tuesday, Dec. 13 at 7:30 where they will host Bacone inside the NSU Event Center.
