RiverHawks upset #13 Mules to even series

For the second time in as many weeks, NSU baseball takes down top 20 team

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. – The Northeastern State baseball team posted a 9-7 upset victory over No. 13 Central Missouri Saturday afternoon at Rousey Field.

The RiverHawks (22-18, 16-14 MIAA) used a three-run eighth to even up the weekend series and hand the MIAA-leading Mules (27-11, 25-6) just their sixth loss in conference play this season.

UCM took control early when Bennett Oliver hit a three-run homer in the top of the first, but the home team responded with two runs in the home half of the frame to keep the Mules within striking distance.

Seniors Justin Burgess and Shane Bridges hit back-to-back home runs in the fourth to push NSU ahead 6-3, but Oliver cut the deficit down to 6-5 when he hit his second homer of the day in the top of the fifth. Central Missouri then tied the game in the sixth when Miles Orscheln scored on a wild pitch.

Neither team scored in the seventh, and Northeastern State blanked UCM in the eighth. The RiverHawks were able to manufacture three runs in the home half of the frame and fended off a Dylan Farrell solo home run in the top of the ninth to secure the upset victory.

This marked the second-straight weekend that NSU upset a nationally-ranked team after the green and white toppled No. 20 Emporia State on the road April 15.

Eight of NSU's batters finished with at least one hit, led by two each from Bridges, junior Dakota Woods and sophomore Michael Rhea. Burgess finished with three RBI, Rhea drove in two and scored twice, and both Woods and Bridges scored a pair of runs.

True freshman Zach Parish pitched the first seven innings and posted a no-decision after allowing six runs on six hits, while striking out eight and walking three. Junior Tyler Yancey (2-2) tossed the final two frames and earned the win on the mound. He conceded one run on one hit.

UCM starter Ethan Westphal (6-2) was saddled with just his second loss of the season after giving up nine runs on 11 hits in 7.2 frames. He posted six K's and one walk.

Oliver belted two homers and finished 2-for-2 with five RBI and two runs scored. He provided all of Central Missouri's offense on the day, as the rest of the team finished with just five combined hits and only one run driven home.

The two teams will close out the series at noon April 24.
