NSU stays dominant in non-conference play

RiverHawks earn decisive 2-0 victory over Ouachita Baptist on Military Appreciation Day

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. – The Northeastern State women's soccer team defeated Ouachita Baptist 2-0 Sunday afternoon at DeLoache Field in the annual Military Appreciation Day contest for the RiverHawks.

NSU improved to 4-0 on the year and also moved its record to 25-2 in non-conference competition since joining the MIAA in 2012. NSU has outscored opponents by an 85-12 margin in those 27 non-conference matches over the past five seasons.

After playing to a scoreless draw through the first 45 minutes, junior forward Melissa Giles put the RiverHawks on top with a goal in the 59th minute. Her second tally of the year was shot from 30 yards out and sailed over the outstretched arms of the keeper.

Junior midfielder Julia Mathis assisted on the goal, and then punctuated her day with a marker of her own in the 88th minute. Senior forward Anastasia Robinson made a run along the left flank and sent a long cross into the box. Mathis collected the ball, made a move around a defender and shot past the keeper to the low, left post.

She has already tied her career high for goals in a single season with her MIAA-leading sixth of the year.

Northeastern State dominated possession for the majority of the contest and posted a substantial 32-2 shot advantage. NSU also led in corner kicks 7-1.

Senior goalkeeper Jordan Woodruff (4-0) continues to extend her own school records for career victories (41) and shutouts (24). She stopped the lone shot on goal, which was a deep free kick midway through the first half.

Erin Webster (0-3-1) stood on her head for most of the match and was able to save 13 shots on frame. She suffered the loss after giving up the two goals.

The RiverHawks will remain home for their next contest, which will be a non-conference tilt against rival Central Oklahoma at 7 p.m. Sept. 16.
