RiverHawks knock off #9 Midwestern State in Texas

Northeastern State travels to hostile territory and takes down top 10 program, 1-0

WICHITA FALLS, Texas – The Northeastern State men's soccer team went onto enemy grounds and knocked off No. 9 Midwestern State 1-0 Monday night at MSU Soccer Field.

The win was the first for the RiverHawks (2-3) over a top-10 team since they defeated No. 4 Rockhurst by an identical 1-0 margin on Sept. 5, 2014. This also marked the first triumph over the Mustangs since Sept. 10, 2006.

In front of a home crowd that nearly topped quadruple figures (989), the Midwestern State faithful was treated to a thrilling back-and-forth affair that went scoreless through 87 minutes.

The contest finally tilted toward the visiting side with just 2:37 remaining in regulation, when junior midfielder Trevor Reed headed a shot into the net off a brilliant free kick cross from sophomore midfielder Joseph Garcia.

Northeastern State put the clamps down on the home attack the rest of the way. The RiverHawks did not allow the Mustangs to attempt a shot in the final minutes of play as they frantically chased the equalizer.

MSU (2-1-1) was able to outshoot NSU 22-8, but the home side could only muster four shots on goal. All four attempts were saved by junior goalkeeper Ryan Davis (2-1) in his first shutout at NSU.

Davis' counterpart, Noah Fazekas (2-1-0), leaked in the lone goal and made just one save in the losing effort.

Northeastern State is now riding high following two consecutive victories that were won late by Reed headers, who has scored four of NSU's five goals in 2016. The RiverHawks will look to keep the momentum going when they return home to play host to Oklahoma Baptist at 5 p.m. Sept. 19 at DeLoache Field.
