Women’s Soccer nets big season-opening triumph

Northeastern State earns 3-0 road victory over Oklahoma Christian Saturday

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. – The Northeastern State women's soccer team took down Oklahoma Christian 3-0 Saturday evening at Eagle Soccer Field in the season opener.
 
The RiverHawks began the year 1-0, while the Eagles dropped to 1-1.
 
NSU struck first in the 17th minute when junior midfielder Julia Mathis finished a pass from junior forward Melissa Giles. Mathis added a second tally in the 53rd minute after heading in a corner from senior midfielder Kelsey McIntyre.
 
Giles added an insurance marker in the 62nd minute with the help from senior forward Anastasia Robinson.
 
Senior goalkeeper Jordan Woodruff (1-0) swatted aside all eight shots on goal to extend her own school record to 38 career victories and 22 career shutouts.
 
OC's Carina Schanz (1-1) finished with seven saves of her own but conceded the three goals in 90 minutes.
 
NSU outshot Oklahoma Christian 18-15 and led in corner kicks, 6-4.
 
The green and white will remain on the road with a 7 p.m. match Sept. 5 at Northwestern Oklahoma State in Alva, Oklahoma.
