NSU returns home to face Washburn and #2 Emporia State

The headline: Rylie Torrey with back-to-back 20 point outings leads the MIAA in scoring with 18.4 points per game which is also 35th highest in the nation. Northeastern State will play their next three games at home with Washburn and Emporia State visiting this week, Central Oklahoma will come to the NSU Event Center next Saturday with no weekday game scheduled.  Through their first 14 games, NSU has done a good job of controlling the ball with 13.5 turnovers per game which is fourth in the MIAA and 19th in the nation heading into this week's contests.

At the line: Northeastern State leads the MIAA and is ninth the nation in free-throw percentage.  The RiverHawks entering this week's contests are 78.3-percent at the line with Cailyn Long ninth overall at 91.5-percent.  NSU's best season at the line was in 1990-91 season were they went 75.7-percent during the NAIA era.

Last time out for NSU: Rylie Torrey led the RiverHawks with 26 points but NSU cooled off in the homestretch to fall 66-62 at Lincoln in Jefferson City, Mo. on Saturday afternoon. 

Northeastern State rallied back from an eight-point halftime deficit to lead as many as seven with just over a minute remaining in the third period.   The RiverHawks were ahead by four, 60-56, with 6:02 left in regulation but they would only make one bucket the rest of the way to allow the Blue Tigers to crawl back and pass NSU.

Torrey knocked down five treys and had ten of NSU's 25 points in the third quarter; Cailyn Long added ten as the other RiverHawks' player in double-figures.  Northeastern State trailed Lincoln by one with 36 rebounds, Mary Jane Buschmann had seven as a team high, and she chipped in seven points.

The series with Washburn: This will be the tenth overall meeting between Washburn and the RiverHawks where NSU trails the series 5-4.  At Northeastern State, the RiverHawks have an even series in four meetings; WU won in both contests last season.

Last time out for Washburn: A 15-0 run by #2 Emporia State to start Saturday's game doomed Washburn with a 75-49 road loss this last Saturday.  The Ichabods were out-rebounded 45-to-24 with Erin Dohnalek leading WU with 13 points .

Scouting Washburn: Washburn saw a four game winning steak snapped on Saturday with their loss at Empoira State.  The Ichabods are fourth in the MIAA in field-goal percentage offense and defense; also on the defensive side, they are 42nd nationally by holding teams to 57.4 points per game.  Alyxis Bowens has 21 blocks this season which is fourth most in the MIAA she also leads Washburn in scoring with 10.9 points per outing.   Jharian Bowen and Erika Lane both average just over ten points per game with Land dishing out a 3.2 average in assists.

The series with Emporia State: The RiverHawks trail the overall series 9-5 with the Lady Hornets and in Tahlequah the series holds a 4-3 edge toward ESU.  Northeastern State has dropped their last two outings against Emporia State with the last win coming in at ESU in a 58-56 overtime thriller during the 2014-15 season. 

Last time out for Emporia State: The Lady Hornets will be at Central Oklahoma on Thursday before facing the RiverHawks.  In their last game they beat, travel partners Washburn 75-29 after forcing ten turnovers in the opening quarter.  Kyristie Miller led ESU with 24 points and she had eight rebounds in the win. 

Scouting Emporia State: The Lady Hornets have spent multiple weeks as NCAA Division II's top-ranked team and will enter Saturday's contest at second.  Empoira State leads the MIAA in eight different statistical categories and they lead the nation in overall rebound margin at +15.9.   With just under 86 points per game, Empoira State is fifth in the nation in scoring, Kelly Moten is second in the MIAA with 17.8 points per game, and fourth in assists with 4.6 per game.  Moten has been sent to the line 97 times which is the most in the MIAA and 12th most in Division II women's basketball.
