Rylie Torrey led the RiverHawks with 17 points but cold shooting slowed NSU in their return home falling 67-48 on Thursday night to Washburn.
Northeastern State shot 6-for-24 in the second and third quarter while getting out-scored by 15. On the boards, Washburn controlled the glass 38-to-22 against the RiverHawks.
"We didn't come out with a competitive effort on defense, we couldn't keep them (Washburn) off the boards, and we got hurt real bad in those areas during the first half," said head coach
Randy Gipson.
"I'm disappointed, we come back from being on the road for a good stretch, and come back here after playing well in our last home game. I'm just disappointed that we didn't put together a better competitive effort out of there tonight."
Cailyn Long was NSU's other scorer in double-figures with 13 points;
Alexis Hill had four assists, and three steals.
The RiverHawks shot 36-percent (18-50) from the field and connecting on nine treys; Washburn was 49.1-percent (27-55) on their side of the floor.
Northeastern State took off ahead of Washburn early in the contest but following a
Hailey Chamberlin layup with 3:41 left in the first period to put the RiverHawks ahead 12-10 they would go ice cold the rest of the half. Washburn finished the half on a 25-8 run to take a 17-point lead in the locker room, Torrey led NSU with 11 points, and the RiverHawks shooting 33.3-percent from the field.
Both teams came out cold in the third quarter with only 16 points being scored. Northeastern State caught momentum in the final four minutes after Washburn pulled ahead by 28, the RiverHawks dropped five treys before the final horn.
Washburn had three in double-figures with Jharian Bowen scoring 18 points, the win over the RiverHawks will send them to 11-4 and 4-2 in MIAA; Northeastern State falls to 6-9 overall and 2-5 in league play.
The RiverHawks will face #2 Emporia State on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. inside the NSU Event Center.
