TOPEKA, Kan. – A first half goal by
Jessie Lynch off of a corner kick was all the offense Northeastern State needed to shutout Washburn 1-0 on Sunday afternoon.
The win kept the RiverHawks undefeated through their first nine matches and they are one of six remaining schools in the nation who do not have a loss or draw on their record. Of those six teams who are undefeated, four of them make up the top-6 in last week's United Soccer Coaches National Poll; the RiverHawks have yet to receive a vote this season.
Lynch's goal came in the 34th minute on a corner kick from
Sarah Rector for her fifth goal of the season. The RiverHawks would have seven shots in the first half with two of them on-goal.
In the final 45-minutes, the RiverHawks defense suffocated Washburn to only a pair of shots, and they were held to a season low six shots across the afternoon. The Ichabods held a 6-2 advantage on corner kicks to the RiverHawks with only one of them resulting in a shot on-goal.
The shutout was the first for Washburn (5-4-1, 1-2 MIAA) this season and Northeastern State's sixth;
Meg Smith collected her fourth shutout of the season in seven starts.
Northeastern State is now 3-0 within MIAA play and they will remain on the road to face Lindenwood on Friday, Oct. 6 at 7 p.m.
