TAHLEQUAH – Three first goals in the opening half sent the RiverHawks to their ninth consecutive victory on senior night beating Delta State 3-0 on a chilly Saturday evening.
The win was Northeastern State's ninth in a row at Dr. Dan F. DeLoache Field which is a program best for the squad that was last set in 1995.
Joe Garcia put the RiverHawks on the board first on a penalty kick in the 26th minute for his 12th goal of the season. The NSU junior has had at-least a point in the last nine contests. Four minutes later Garcia picked up an assist on his corner kick that connected on a header by
James Doyle to send NSU up 2-0 on Delta State.
Jacob Weaver completed the NSU scoring outburst in the 40th minute on a breakaway for his second goal of the season.
The RiverHawks had a slim 9-to-8 edge on shots against the Statesmen (4-13-1) with
Ryan Davis having three saves, and his sixth shutout of the season which is tied for second most in season all-time.
With nine wins NSU is three games off from tying the all-time winning streak which is 12 set during the 2004 season. For the RiverHawks to tie that mark they would need a road sweep next week at Upper Iowa and Lindenwood and a win in the first game of the NCAA Tournament.
Northeastern State is 12-4 this season and will head to Fayette, Iowa on Friday to face Upper Iowa in MIAA play.
