RiverHawks win on late heroics; will host Washburn in MIAA Tournament

BOLIVAR, Mo. – For the second game in a row Northeastern State pulled off a dramatic win beating Southwest Baptist 3-2 on a header with 95 seconds remaining in regulation on Sunday.

Unlike Friday's 1-0 double-overtime win over at home against Central Oklahoma, the RiverHawks trailed 2-1 up to the 79th minute.  A loss on Sunday to Southwest Baptist who was eliminated from postseason conference play could have sunk the RiverHawks' hopes of qualifying for the NCAA Tournament.

Mariah Nicolet turned NSU's postseason dreams around with a shot just outside of the back of the box that went over the SBU keeper's head to tie the game at two.   With time running down on the clock, Northeastern State got a free kick on a Bearcat foul and Shelby Brewster who was Friday's hero landed a pass to Paulina Chavez and headed it in through the net for the NSU win.

The RiverHawks tailed for the majority of the contest but tied the game shortly at the 22-minute mark with Paige Lorenzo getting a goal on a kick that was deflected off the keeper but hit the post and went back into the goal.  Southwest Baptist responded back with a goal three minutes later to put NSU down a point.

Northeastern State had a 11-to-9 edge on the Beatcats (3-12-2, 1-8-1 MIAA) on shots but on corner kicks, SBU held a 4-to-1 lead.  Meg Smith had three saves in front of the net for the RiverHawks.

Win or loss on Sunday, Northeastern State (15-2, 9-2 MIAA) was locked in as the No. 3 seed in the tournament, and with the regular season completing they will host Washburn on Wednesday at 7 p.m. in Tahlequah.

Wednesday's winner will advance to the semifinals on Friday, Nov. 3 which will best hosted the highest remaining seed.  Should NSU win on Wednesday they will face either Central Oklahoma or Missouri Western.
