TAHLEQUAH –
Sierra Crick and
Kelsey Harmon both hit homers for Northeastern State as they swept a non-conference doubleheader over Newman at RiverHawks Park on Wednesday.
NSU battled back after giving up a one-run lead with two outs in the top of the seventh to win 4-3 on a walkoff hit by Harmon in the bottom frame. In the nightcap, all the runs were scored in the first two innings with Harmon's homer to right field coming in as the game winner in the 4-1 victory over the Jets.
The RiverHawks got plenty of support in the circle with
Taryn Gray (1-1) picking up a complete game win with three strikeouts.
Sylver Collins (2-1) went 4 2/3 innings with two strikeouts in game two,
Jennifer Wolf recorded the final seven outs out of the bullpen after coming in with the tying run at the plate.
Harmon finished the afternoon with three hits and four RBI.
Northeastern State had four hits in each game and was assisted by four NU errors in the opener.
"I'm pleased that we found a way to win even though our bats aren't where we want them yet," said head coach
Clay Davis. "It was good that we got some big hits when needed,
Sierra Crick's homer off the top of the scoreboard and
Kelsey Harmon had two for us. Outside of one inning I thought our pitchers threw well."
"Overall we just need to continue to swing the bats and swing our way out of this slump."
Wednesday's wins move the RiverHawks back up to .500 with a 3-3 overall record, and Newman falls to 2-11.
Northeastern State will head to Bentonville, Ark. to play in the Eight-State Classic for five games starting on Friday.
