BENTONVILLE, Ark. -- Northeastern State split their first day of the Eight-State Classic on Friday falling 6-2 to #24 Missouri-St. Louis and then besting William Jewell 3-2 in the nightcap.
The RiverHawks nearly grabbed a win in both games with a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the sixth against UMSL. The Tritons (7-4) would hit a three run homer and then added a two out insurance run to take a three run lead on the RiverHawks. In the seventh, Northeastern State went down in order for the loss.
NSU had five hits with
Sierra Crick hitting her second homer of the season in the sixth and
Paige Gann also had an RBI single in the same inning.
Mollie Carter started the game in the circle and went two innings, with one earn run charged.
Jennifer Wolf (0-2) went the final four innings, and didn't give up a hit until the sixth in the loss.
In the nightcap, Northeastern State's bats came around and knocked out 12 hits but had difficulty pushing a run to home.
William Jewell (1-1) struck in the opening inning scoring on a two out single. After a scoreless inning, NSU tied the game on a
Kelsey Harmon single to score
Ashton Birchfield in from third. In the bottom frame, WJC did some two-out damage with a RBI single for the go-ahead run.
The RiverHawks mounted their comeback in the sixth starting with a
Haley Acrey leadoff single.
Ryan Martin followed up with a single through the left side to put runners at first and second with no outs. Following a switch in the circle,
Jessica Boone dropped down a sac bunt to move the runners over a base. Northeastern State wouldn't need to make contact with the ball to tie because of a wild pitch scoring Acrey in from third.
Jess Schuler followed up with the go-ahead run on a sac fly.
Paige Gann and Martin both had three hits for NSU in the win to send them back up to 4-4 this season.
Sylver Collins (3-1) picked up the win in the circle after tossing three perfect innings out of the bullpen.
Taryn Gray started the contest, with four innings of work, and two earned runs charged.
Northeastern State will play one game on Saturday against Concordia St. Paul at 1 p.m.
