TAHLEQUAH – The middle innings treated the RiverHawks well as they completed a perfect four-game home stand with a 12-6 win over Oklahoma Baptist.
Northeastern State plated all 12 runs in-between the fourth and sixth innings which was highlighted by a three run homer by
Butch Rea. Nine NSU hits were recorded against an Oklahoma Baptist team that won 43 games a year ago and was the Great American Conference's preseason selection to win its league's title. Additionally, in the National Collegiate Baseball Writer's Association (NCBWA) Central Region Poll that was released during Tuesday's game jumped the RiverHawks into the top-10 and is seventh with 29 points; the Bison were ninth in this week's poll.
"We were being very competitive at the plate," said head coach
Jake Hendrick. "Every guy that goes up there is being a tough out and that's something we preach all the time. We want to be tough outs and we want to make it as hard on the pitcher to get us out. If you look at the stats and maybe the batting average isn't where people would like it to be but I can tell you that on-base percentage is pretty good."
"We needed a good mid-week outing and our guys were commanding the zone better and really trying to challenge the hitters. I felt like in the last to mid-week contests we really didn't do that."
The Bison struck with a run in the second and third innings before NSU tied the game in the fourth on a
Dylan Adams double to center field. Northeastern State dropped the hammer down in the following frame with 12 batters going the plate and recording eight runs on only three hits.
Derek Shedden scored two in the inning with Rea hitting his three run blast.
In the sixth, OBU scored a run in the top half of the inning before
Dakota Woods doubled in a RBI and
Blake Vandegrift hit a ground ball RBI out to put the RiverHawks up 12-3.
With the game at hand toward NSU's way, the Bison (8-5) plated two in the seventh and one more in the ninth.
Shayne Warren started the game for the RiverHawks and went four innings,
Tyler Yancey (1-1) came in during the fifth to pick up the win in relief.
Zack Hammock and
James Cowell also entered the game for Northeastern State.
Tuesday's win sends the RiverHawks to 9-3 overall and they will travel to Washburn for a three game series starting on Friday.
