TOPEKA, Kan. – Northeastern State's four game winning streak came to a halt on a 13th inning walk off by Washburn to fall 3-2 on Friday night.
For the Ichabods, it was the third's time the charm after getting the winning run 90 feet away three times before scoring the winner on a sacrifice fly ball.
Friday's contest was NSU first extra-inning contest this season and first since having a 14 inning marathon on April 20, 2016 at Rousey Field against Central Oklahoma.Â
Pitching ruled the night with 13 total hits and 20 strikeouts recorded by both teams. Northeastern State had six with
Derek Shedden and
Zane Takhar both having a pair of hits.
Hunter Neal started the contest for NSU and he went 7 2/3 innings with four strikeouts in the no-decision.  The RiverHawks used three out of the bullpen with
Dustin Berrong being used for four innings and he struck out five in his longest outing of the year. Â
Zach Poehl and
Zack Hammock (1-1) were also used out of the bullpen in the loss.
After giving up a run in the third, Northeastern State tied the game in the fourth on a
Dakota Morse ground out.
Both starting pitchers locked in and tossed blanks for three innings before the RiverHawks plated the go-ahead run in the eighth on
Butch Rea one-out single to score Takhar in from third. However, in the bottom frame, a Washburn one-out triple came back to even the game at two each after eight innings.
NSU threatened again in the ninth with runners on the corners and one out but the inning ended on a double play. The Ichabods then blew a golden opportunity to win the game with the bases loaded on two walks and a hit batter.  Berrong struck out two straight WU batters and popped out the third to work out of the jam.
In extras, NSU left empty handed after putting leadoff runners on in the tenth and twelfth innings.  Washburn opened the bottom of the twelfth with a double to left center and sac bunt put the runner 90 feet away. But for once again, Berrong worked some more magic and struck out the next runner, then WU grounded out to short to end the inning.
In the 13th inning, Washburn put a pair on at second and third with one out before the Ichabods won the game on a full-count fly ball to left field.
Friday's win snapped a four game skid for Washburn (9-6, 1-3 MIAA) who won their first league game of the season; the RiverHawks are now 9-4 overall and 3-1 in MIAA play.
Northeastern State continues the MIAA series at Washburn with a single game on Saturday at 1 p.m.
